Edit steps and annotate screenshots

A raw capture is usually good enough to send. When it is not, the editor lets you rewrite, reorder, and draw on it.

Working with steps

Every finished capture opens in the editor, and you can reopen any guide from your library. Instructions are editable inline: click the text and rewrite it. The written step and its screenshot stay tied together, so fixing wording never breaks the image.

  • Drag a step by its handle to reorder it. The numbering renumbers itself.
  • Delete a step you do not need, such as a stray click on the way to the real action.
  • Attach a tip or a warning callout to a step, for the gotcha that is obvious to you and invisible to everyone else.
  • Rename the guide, which is worth doing if the auto-generated title is close but not quite right.
Annotating a screenshot

Open a step image and draw directly on it. Annotations are stored as regions rather than baked into the pixels, so you can move or delete one later without losing the original screenshot. Seven types are available:

  • click-target: the highlight Knovvy places automatically on what you clicked.
  • arrow and box: point at something, or frame it.
  • highlight: a translucent wash over a region.
  • blur: obscure a region. This is the one to reach for on anything sensitive that auto-blur could not detect.
  • text and number: labels and sequence markers drawn on the image.

Auto-blur only catches form fields, because that is what the DOM tells us about. A secret rendered as page text, an API key shown after you generate it, a customer name in a table, is not detected automatically. Drop a blur region on it here.

Re-recording instead of editing

If the underlying tool changed enough that half the screenshots are wrong, re-capturing is usually faster than repairing. That is the whole point of capture being deterministic: a fresh recording costs two minutes, not an afternoon of screenshotting.
